The G-20 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The G-20 assembly is a forum designed to address, discuss, make permanent policies on pressing issues facing the global economy in terms of governance, climate change, health, and security.

Kenya will be the second country from Africa to join the world’s greatest economies G-20, this is after African Union (AU) is allowed to join the assembly adopting the same way European Union was absorbed.

According to the statement released by the White House Adviser Judd Devermont, the US President Joe Biden endorsed the move of involving the African Union in the G-20 assembly, explaining that, more African voices are vital in the international conversations.

“We need more African voices in international conversations that concern the global economy, democracy and governance, climate change, health, and security,” Devermont read from the statement on December 10.

The involvement of more African Countries in the world table was proposed by AU Chair and Senegalese President Macky Sall and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

How it impacts Kenya

By AU being registered a permanent member of the G-20, Kenya will have a place at the global high table by virtue of being a AU member.

Kenya being geographically situated at the horn of Africa where adverse Climate Change crisis is currently being experienced, with catastrophic events like drought ploughing most parts, Kenya will be able to find ways of mitigating that.

Kenya having a subbotaged economy due to terror activities and Corruption, the opportunity will offer a platform for the country to propose policies that will bring stability to the region.

Participating in the G-20 allows Kenya as part of a continent with poor health structures, to be able to mend how to respond to pandemics and diseases requiring specialised treatment.

Kenya will be able to negotiate and advocate for more resource funding to promote health systems in the country and the continent.
