Your best Lead Actor/Actress will be crowned this weekend at the Kalasha Awards. Best TV Drama, Best TV Comedy, and many more categories
The Kalasha Awards is an initiative by the Kenya Film Commission aimed at promoting a vibrant film industry, regulated and democratic, to encourage a healthy level of competition among filmmakers.
This year, the 12th edition of the Kalasha Awards has included 39 new categories. The new categories are; Best Viewer’s Choice(TV Drama), Best Viewer’s Choice ( Feature), Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama, Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama, Best Regional Film, Best Documentary (Short), Best Documentary (Feature), Best Makeup and Hair Stylist, and Best Costume Designer.
The Best International Award Category has seen four films from Tanzania and one from Uganda make it to the list. This year’s Kalasha Film and TV Awards will be held in Nairobi in what is building up to be an event full of glitz and glamour.
As seen in previous editions, the main highlight will be the Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a film.
The Best Lead Actor nominees are;
- Morris Mwangi- Kony Kiwo (Baba Twins)
- Elyas Muhamud-Assad (Gacal)
- Basil Mungai-Kev (Click Click Bang)
- Barkhad Abdi- Ayaanle (Ayaanle)
- Tim King’oo- Koome (Last Supper)
The Best Lead Actress nominees are;
- Violetta Ngina- Wamz (Baba Twins)
- Nyokabi Macharia- Wendo (Chaguo)
- Mwanatunu Imam- Mandia (Jaramandia)
- Marianne Nungo- Mama Koome (Last Supper)
- Joyce Musoke- Wlizabeth (Wise Woman)
Youth Affairs, Sports, and Arts CS Ababu Namwamba will be the Chief Guest presiding over the event.

Ayaanle and Click Click Bang were the most nominated shows, with 14 and 12 respectively. Mental health awareness, domestic violence, elections, substance and drug abuse, and violence, have been noted as constant themes in Films nominated at the Kalasha Awards 2022.

TMI with Ty could make history, having been nominated to the Kalasha Awards for the first time. The show has seen top comedians and influential Kenyans make appearances in a well-crafted TV Comedy Show.
The Best TV Comedy Category will be hotly contested by TMY with Ty, Roast House (by Eugene Mbugua), and Varshita (by Lucy Mwangi).
In 2021, the Best Lead Actor in a film was Mawuli Gavor in Just In Time. The Best Lead Actress was Sarah Hassan in Just In Time. This year, who’s your pick?
