Former Thika Queens and Besiktas striker Esse Akida, earlier this week, was awarded the Golden boot trophy for a successful campaign with the Greek club, FC PAOK Thessaloniki, emerging top scorer with 18 goals in the 2021-2022 campaign. FC PAOK won the league for a record 17th time and she was awarded at the 41st Greek Panhellenic Association of Paid Footballers and Women Footballers (PSAPP) awards.
Esse Akida was born in Kilifi County in 1992 and began her career in 2002 with an NGO known as Moving the Goalposts Kenya. She has been a member of Harambee Starlets since 2012 and was part of the fondly-remembered 2016 squad that led Kenya to qualification for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Esse caught the attention of many at Spedag, scoring many goals and providing top assists. She played for Kenyan side Thika Queens before signing for Ramat HaSharon FC in October 2018
In 2020, Esse Akida made the most high-profile move in Kenya women’s football history by signing for Turkish giants, Besiktas. Esse became the first woman in women’s history to join the Istanbul-based club, which features in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Esse Akida joined the Greek club FC PAOK Thessaloniki in July 2021 and has become a vital part of the squad- the league’s top scorer. The striker was happy with the achievement and had this to say, “To aspiring women footballers back at home, yesternight proved that no one can dim your light when you are dedicated to what you do. Keep grinding, keep working on your craft, and keep believing because one day you will win too.”
