Lula da Silva Commiting to Climate Leadership

Brazilian president-elect Lula Inacio Lula da Silva has pledged to fight global warming as his commitment to ecological conservation while marking the 27th Climate Conference in Egypt.

Lula arrived in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where he immediately held meetings on climate diplomacy with John Kerry of the United States and Xie Zhenhua of China.

In his first international trip after downing the incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro, who ruled over years of widespread Amazon deforestation, the left-leaning politician is expected to give the COP27 climate talk much-needed momentum.

Lula tweeted late Tuesday, “Brazil is back in the world to debate the climate issue.” “We shall be a reason for the world to feel proud.”

Lula is scheduled to speak at the COP27 summit on Wednesday afternoon to discuss his “zero deforestation” goal. The average yearly deforestation rate grew by 75% under Bolsonaro, a steadfast supporter of agribusiness.

The G20 summit set an important discussion between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden, where the two decided to restore their previous climate cooperation.

Analysts contend that Bolsonaro’s lax attitudes towards deforestation and exploitation of the Amazon, whose preservation is vital to the battle against global warming, contributed to Latin America’s most populous nation becoming increasingly isolated.

Silva advocated for setting a 12 million-hectare reforestation goal and establishing a new national body to coordinate climate action across government agencies.
