Following a public outcry over noise pollution, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has now revoked permits for nightclubs operating in residential neighborhoods.
The statement was signed by the county secretary and head of public service DR. Jairus Musumba.
“No night clubs licenses will be issued or renewed for premises operating within the residential areas” the statement read
“Those already issued are hereby canceled and the establishments may continue operating as bars and restaurants only. Henceforth night club licenses will be issued to premises only within the central business district and specified streets in other non-residential areas.”

Bars and restaurants in residential areas are also required to operate within a specified time and control noise emanating from their premises.
Playing of Music of the Bars and restaurants in residential areas must stop by 10 PM.

Liquor-selling premises in the county should also be able to provide sufficient parking for their clients as vehicles obstructing roads and footpaths shall be impounded.
Two months prior, proposals for the closure of at least 43 bars in the city’s uptown neighborhoods due to noise pollution were rejected by the county government.
Njoroge Muchiri, the deputy governor of Nairobi, stated on October 12 that as long as a bar complies with the law, the county administration will not close it.
