Carabao Cup: Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Eliminated

Carabao Cup

Big London clubs crash out of Carabao Cup Third Round stage. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham dumped out of tournament as Manchester City, Liverpool advance.

Brighton and Hove Albion exposed Mikel Arteta’s lack of squad depth in their 3-1 win at the Emirates in the Carabao Cup Third Round. For the first time in 12 matches, Arsenal have been beaten at home.

The Arsenal Manager fielded only one player from their 1-0 win against Chelsea on Sunday in the Premier League. William Saliba, who was Arsenal’s best defender on the night, played in front of 20-year-old debutant goalkeeper Karl Hein.

Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring for the Gunners, assisted by Arsenal’s most threatening player in attack, Reiss Nelson. Nelson put in a spirited performance before debutant goalkeeper Karl Hein made the goalkeeping error that led to Brighton’s penalty equalizer through Danny Welbeck.

Kaoru Mitoma and Tariq Lamptey finished Arsenal’s hope in the contest scoring the all-important two goals to seal the victory.

Arsenal will travel to the Molineux stadium this Saturday to face Wolves in their final match ahead of the World Cup.

Citizens Advance Against Rivals Chelsea

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola brought in five different players from the starters in the win against Fulham on Saturday. Squad depth is not a problem for the Citizens since despite giving a debut to 18-year-old Lewis Hall, Manchester City players were impeccable.

Jack Grealish put in a top-notch performance but it was Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez who were on the scoresheet for the Citizens.

Tottenham knocked out by Premier League bottom-placed club

Nottingham Forest deservedly defeated Spurs 2-0 at home, courtesy of goals by Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard. Lingard’s experience in the Premier League proved crucial on Wednesday night despite Spurs fielding a strong first 11.

Speaking after the game Spurs Head Coach Antonio Conte said,

“It’s very frustrating. We tried to play the game in the right way and I can’t complain about the commitment of my players.

“Now we need to end in the right way on Saturday because we have an important game against Leeds and we want to end this tough period with a win.”
