The Governor visited the area two days after the incident and formulated measures to address the matter.
The Nairobi county chief said that the county government will build a fire station near the market.
“Together with the traders, we have identified the location for the fire station whose construction will start soon,” The Nairobi Governor said.
In addition, Sakaja also stated that a perimeter wall will be built around the market premises and CCTV surveillance cameras will be installed for security purposes.
“Gikomba is truly a public land and we will build it for the public. Thus, it should belong to the people of Nairobi and we are going to defend that from land grabbers.
“Our surveyors will be on the ground on Tuesday, October 19, 2022, to demarcate the land so as to process a valid title deed for Gikomba as the Public Land. One of the causes of the fires has been identified as land grabbing,” the Governor said.
Nairobi governor also assured that drilling a borehole and servicing hydrants starts this week.
When he visited the Gikomba market, Mr. Sakaja donated Ksh1 million and 5000 iron sheets to the affected traders in the area.
“I have given out significant personal support for the traders to rebuild and continue with their businesses. I also feel for your loss,” Sakaja made a strong clarification.
