The yearly Nyege Nyege Festival has been outlawed by the Ugandan Parliament.
The State Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Rose Lilly Akello, stated that the event encourages immorality and that it is not welcomed in Uganda in an interview with the Daily Monitor on Tuesday.
“The matter was on floor in Parliament, I had to give my side of the coin and Parliament has resolved that with all what entails Nyege Nyege must stop because they take underage children, they do a lot of immoral activities there that are not even worth to be mentioned,” the minister said.
Speaker Anitah Among reportedly stated that they would not permit the event to take place in the name of increasing tourism, according to records from the Ugandan Parliament.
“We are talking about morality of this country; we are talking about our children. You are trying to promote tourism at the expense of our children? We are not going to allow this function to take place,” the Speaker said.
The Tororo Woman Member of Parliament, Honorable Sarah Opendi, reiterated the Speaker’s thoughts when she remarked that the gathering was a breeding ground for sexual immorality.
Due to the Minister of State for Tourism, Honorable Martin Mugarra, failing to sufficiently defend the event as a tourism hub, the female legislators were able to win the debate and ban. Additionally, he disclosed that 8,000 foreign visitors had already reserved tickets for the event that was planned to take place in Jinja.
