After the announcement of the Supreme Court Verdict, Chief Justice Martha Koome has spoken days later on since making a landmark ruling by upholding William Ruto as the fifth president of Kenya.
The Supreme Court of Kenya dismissed the petition by Azimio Leader Raila Odinga against the president-elect’s win for lack of enough evidence to prove irregularities in the Presidential Election.
During the funeral of her aunt in Imenti North Constituency, Meru County, Justice Koome said the Independence of the Kenyan Judiciary has been acknowledged worldwide depicting the exercising of true democracy.
“Entire Africa and even the world are saying they are looking upon Kenya for leadership and also independent institutions, especially the institution of the Judiciary. This is not because of power, this is not because of my might…it is because of the faithful God that we serve,” Koome said during the burial of her late aunt Salome Gakii.
Emphasizing that the occurrence of the whole process was a success as it was only through the Lord’s manifestation as it wasn’t her might or the Supreme Court’s might that saw it through.
She further remarked that Kenya is now looked upon by other nations as a mature democracy as portrayed in the finished August 2022 polls.
The country maintained its peace as the petitioned election case was ongoing with several hooked on their televisions following up on the proceedings.
A ruling of this magnitude is said to have earned Kenya praise from international communities, who had thought there would be violence.
In her view, other leaders are borrowing a leaf from Kenya’s governance and leadership systems, where there is no interference between the different arms of government.
CJ Koome delved much deeper in seeking to advise and send a message out that institutions can achieve much when they are independent.
“We need to focus on empowering institutions’ independence as it is positive for the country’s development,” she said.
