Ida and Raila met while she was a student at the University of Nairobi.
Raila was an employee of the university’s Engineering department at the time.
The couple exchanged their vows on 1 September 1973 and sired four children together: Winnie Odinga, Rosemary Odinga, Raila Odinga Jr, and the late Fidel Odinga.
However, when her husband was imprisoned as a political prisoner in 1982, Ida Odinga raised her children primarily on her own.
Raila revealed that his wife endured great suffering and humiliation during his nine-year prison sentence on her 70th birthday in 2020.
“All this time, it was Ida who was taking care of Fidel, Rosemary, Winnie, and Junior. For all that time she was a single mother,
“The kids and their mother did not know where to go. This lady you see here (Ida) has gone through a lot for my sake,” said Raila as reported by a local media house.
