Former Nominated Senator Sylvia Kasanga has issued a warning to Azimio runaways decamping to Kenya Kwanza for personal interest saying Kenyans are watching.
Kasanga the former senator said the legislators who have been switching sides since William Ruto was declared President-elect are doing so to secure slots in government despite the pending petition in court challenging the validity of the results and Ruto’s victory.
Kasanga added that it is ridiculous to see members leave Azimio, the coalition that saw them win their respective seats, and that they will regret moving out if the court rules in favor of Raila.
“It’s sad when you see members moving. And now you can see why they are moving because there is this perception that since once camp has been given the certificate giving the impression that they have started to form the government and now they are running there because they don’t want to be left behind. It’s purely personal interest,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to when some of them will come back begging, and they forget that Kenyans are watching there is even no respect upon which the backs of the people you have risen into power.”
Kasanga while speaking on media, further explained why members always focus to scramble for numbers in a General Election, highlighting that a coalition gains the benefit of majority representation in parliament since it’s an open gate for walking through an agenda in the house.
She says that the advantages can become unfavorable since some use it as a path to “control parliament” and pass personal agendas.
“Parliament and politics is always a game of numbers. You can understand why everyone wants the majority number so that you can have your agenda in parliament smooth sailing and you can get things to go your way and that is the scariest part because we have seen in past parliaments where there is a lack of strong opposition. That is not a good thing for democracy and robust debates,” she said.
“When you see this camp that is busy pulling numbers to their side, the question that comes to mind is that trying to have an all-powerful control of parliament. So the independence of parliament becomes a challenge and a question.”
