New digital number plates

The Government has launched a new generation of Digital Number plates with the aim of enhancing security features that will ease the tracing of cars since there has been a rise in cases of vehicle theft.

Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, emphasized that with the new plates, the cases of theft are rampantly increasing, urging that the vehicles imported would be fixed with the new plates at the port upon arrival.

“The plates will be synchronized with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) systems to help eliminate cases of tax evasion in the car selling business. This job is being done by a multi-agency unit of the security sector and is part of the reforms initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2019 Dusit attack,” Matiang’i said.

Matiang’I further called on the Citizens to adopt the new plates at a cost of ksh3,000 as early as possible and heed the call of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials.

Transport CS James Macharia, assured the Kenyans of the plates safety measures with a revelation of the 12 categories of vehicles in line with the legal notice 62 of 2016 and will ease the monitoring of vehicles being imported through the port of Mombasa.

“The plates that comply with the amended Traffic Act of 2016 and will bear additional features some of which that shall be visible physically and others only to security agencies for ease of tracing in the event they are involved in committing the crime.”

Emphasizing that Kenya is a transit hub in the East African region is to pioneer the new technology that will ease the tracking of vehicles and monitoring that has since improved from 3.2 million last year to 4.8 million this year

According to Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, all motorists are required to replace their old number plates within 18 months.
