Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and Shakira were said to be in an open relationship before parting ways after 12 years together.
Multiple reports had earlier suggested that the reason for the breakup was because Pique was unfaithful and was even living in a separate house from his family.
Journalist Antonio Aviles revealed to Marca, that the couple had been in an open relationship for the last few years, debunking rumors the breakup was because Pique had cheated on the Colombian singer.
“Someone very, very close to Pique has assured me that there was no infidelity on his part,” the reporter said on the ‘Viva la Vida’ show after speaking to people close to Pique.

“There is great surprise at the breakup and the statement that Shakira has sent. Their agreement was ‘you do what you want and I’ll do what I want’, but to present themselves as a couple to the public.”
The reporter further explained how Pique was surprised at the news of the breakup and that Shakira decided to announce the breakup without his knowledge.
The two announced their breakup through a joint statement released by their public relations firm.
“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” confirmed the statement.
The two went ahead to ask for privacy during this period to protect their two young children, Sasha and Milan Piqué, from getting involved in the situation.
“For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.” The statement concluded.
