Public Service Vehicles (PSV) operators will increase the transport cost by 20% from Monday, June 20 onwards, in reaction to the rising fuel prices that continue to hammer consumers.
The Federation of Public Transport Sector noted the countrywide fare surge starting will affect the transport operation of all PSVs as far as the fuel cost is concerned.
Last week, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) increased pump prices by KSh 9 per liter raising the cost of super and diesel to KSh 159.12 and KSh 140, respectively in Nairobi.
Kerosene prices also went up by a similar margin and will now retail at KSh 127 in Nairobi.
“The federation hereby resolves that with effect from Monday, June 20, 2022 fares payable on public transport vehicles countrywide shall be adjusted upwards by 20%,” said lobby chairman Edwin Mukabanah.
Similarly, the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has asked its members countrywide to increase transportation charges saying the fuel increase has made the current fares unsustainable.
The Chairperson of the association, Simon Kimutai, has said that several routes in Nairobi will see an increase in fares between KSh 20 and KSh 50.
Routes charging KSh 100, according to Kimutai, will be forced to charge between KSh 120 and KSh 150. The same rates shall apply to other routes accordingly.
