Toronto-based Kenyan lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election, positioning himself as a radical alternative to Kenya’s established political leadership.
Miguna made the announcement during a live appearance on TV47 on Wednesday night, saying his decision was driven by the need for a complete overhaul of what he termed failed leadership models that favour elites at the expense of ordinary Kenyans.
“I will be a candidate for president in 2027,” Miguna said. “My vision is transformative and anchored on the interests of the Kenyan people as the true foundation for national progress.”
The outspoken lawyer said his leadership philosophy would be grounded in integrity, social justice and accountability, sharply contrasting it with the prevailing governance framework in the country.
“This is a vision built on integrity and socialism, not capitalism,” Miguna added, signalling a departure from market-driven economic policies that have dominated successive administrations.
His declaration adds a new dimension to the already expanding field of aspirants eyeing the presidency in 2027, as early political realignments begin to take shape.
Crowded Field Takes Shape Ahead of 2027
Miguna joins a growing list of prominent figures who have publicly expressed interest in the top seat to dethrone incumbent President William Ruto.
Potential contenders include former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, ex-Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, PLP leader Martha Karua, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa and activist Boniface Mwangi.
