Kenyans are being urged to take precautions as soaring temperatures sweep across much of the country. The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast daytime highs exceeding 30°C in most areas, with some regions experiencing cooler nights below 10°C.

Only a few areas, including Mount Kenya, the Coastal region, Tana River, and Taita Taveta, are expected to see light showers. Otherwise, the outlook remains predominantly hot and dry.

“Daytime, Over 30°C in most areas, but 25–30°C in Central Kenya, Rift Valley, South-Eastern lowlands, and the Lake Victoria Basin. Nighttime, Parts of Central Kenya, Rift Valley, and around Mount Kilimanjaro will drop below 10°C,” the KMD advisory stated.

The extreme heat has prompted public health concerns, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Authorities are advising Kenyans to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.), wear loose, breathable clothing, and ensure proper ventilation indoors.

“Stay cool, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable groups,” the statement read. “These simple steps can prevent heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heatstroke.”

Experts note that such temperature fluctuations, with hot days and cold nights, can pose significant health risks, particularly in regions where electricity and air conditioning are limited.

Bernard Chanzu, Deputy Director of Forecasting Services at KMD, highlighted ongoing efforts to improve weather alert systems. The department works closely with multiple organisations to issue Heavy Rainfall Advisories when rainfall exceeds 30mm within 24 hours, providing county-specific guidance up to 72 hours in advance.

In recent weeks, rising temperatures have driven Kenyans to seek guidance from the Met Department. The warnings come amid broader concerns about climate variability in the country, affecting agriculture, water supply, and daily life.

“Precautionary measures are essential to protect public health,” Chanzu said. “We encourage everyone to monitor updates and follow safety advice.”

As temperatures continue to climb, officials emphasise that awareness and simple safety measures remain the best defence against heat-related risks.
