In a move aimed at fostering regional cooperation and enhancing trade within the East African Community (EAC), both Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have abolished visa requirements for each other’s citizens.
This decision follows DRC’s admission as the seventh member of the EAC in April 2022 and demonstrates a commitment to promoting seamless travel and economic ties in the region.

Kenya was the first to make this momentous announcement, with Immigration and Citizen Services Director General Evelyn Cheluget saying, “The government has removed DRC from Category 2 to Category 1 of the visa regulations.”
This change, effective from August 27, 2023, means that holders of DR Congo national passports can now enter Kenya without the need for a visa.
Shortly after Kenya’s move, the DRC reciprocated, with DRC’s Head of the Directorate General of Migration (DGM), Roland Kashwantale Chihoza, declaring, “From September 1, 2023, nationals of the Republic of Kenya are exempt from entry visas to the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
These actions reflect a commitment to the principles outlined in the EAC regulations on free movement of persons within the member states.
President William Ruto had already issued a directive in July 2023 to facilitate this visa waiver after DRC’s accession to the EAC.
This development aligns with the broader goals of the East African Community. By easing visa restrictions, both nations aim to stimulate trade and boost economic opportunities.
The removal of these barriers will not only benefit businesses but also provide greater freedom and convenience for citizens traveling between Kenya and the DRC.
Kenya’s gesture to welcome DRC into the EAC family, coupled with the elimination of visa requirements, underscores the region’s commitment to deepening cooperation and integration.
The Treaty of Accession signed in April 2022 marked a pivotal moment in the EAC’s history, solidifying DRC’s place as a member state and setting the stage for future collaboration.
