Ways to help your kids adjust to Jet Lag

While there is no way to avoid jet lag and there is no known “treatment” for it, following these suggestions will make recovery much quicker and less difficult, allowing you to get the most out of your holiday.

Make time zone adjustments before you depart
Three to four days before your departure date, if at all possible, think about changing your child’s bedtime to 30 minutes earlier. This will help them recover from jet lag more quickly because the direction of travel influences jet lag. According to studies, you should expect a jet lag of 2–3 days when flying west and 6–9 days while flying east.

You can take a quick nap
It’s acceptable to allow small children to take a quick nap to keep them awake if you land during the day and they are falling asleep on their feet. To ensure that they can sleep later at night and wake up feeling rested the next day, limit their siesta to no more than two hours.

Take your time
Since everyone is at their most energetic in the morning, most parents swear by keeping things busy until the afternoon, when they can unwind and take a quick sleep. Even though mornings could be busy, prepare a simple schedule for the first few days after you arrive so that the kids have time to get used to the new environment.

Hydrate yourself thoroughly
You have already heard it. Drink plenty of water throughout your journey to stay hydrated. Drinking water will make your body more efficient at eliminating toxins and keep it healthy for the remainder of the journey.

Upon landing, adjust to the new time
As soon as you land, your phone will automatically switch to the local time of your current location. Do the same. Stop mentally calculating “what time it would be where we came from” and start operating according to the local, current time.

This is crucial at night because that’s when jet lag typically sets in and youngsters start to wake up in the middle of the night. In order to get them back to sleep instead of skipping out on sleep and staying up all night, keep the lights dim, give them a little snack, and encourage them to do so.
