Siblings Alyssa Jamal and Aydan Jamal were crowned the overall winners of the Nyali’s Safaricom Juniors tournament held on Sunday, May 22, at the Nyali’s Golf Club.
The juniors tournament pulled 63 junior participants from all six counties of the coastal region that included Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Tana River and Taita Taveta.
The two who are also students at The Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, played an impressive gross of 83 and 93 points in the par 71 course, to emerge best girl and best boy in the eighteen-hole tournament.
“I want to thank Safaricom and Junior Golf Foundation for organizing this junior event here in Mombasa. I also thank my brother for winning alongside me in today’s tournament. It is fantastic for the two of us and our parents. My first nine was a little bit tough, I scored nine over, but my second nine was good with two over, “said Alyssa Jamal.
Jeff Kibe playing in the 7 years boys’ category and below achieved an outstanding gross of 51 points to emerge ahead of Justus Wagura, who scored 61 points taking second position.
Aarna Mengi playing in the eight years and below girls’ category scored 51 points to edge her closest competitor Irene Asiyo with 56 points.
Larson Odoo led his team in the 12 years boys’ category finished in second place with a score of 111 gross while Mwai Mariga led in the 12 years boys’ category with a total of 100 points.
In the 13-14 years boys’ category Nathan Mujomba after an outstanding performance at Karen country club, led his team in Nyali scoring 94 gross with Abdala Tokal coming in second position.
Rasmeet Kaur came out as the best girl after scoring 87 points ahead of Harsimran Kaur who earned 93 points in the 15 years and above girls’ category. Elvis Nickolas emerged top with 100 points in the 15 years and above boys’ category.

In the senior’s tournament, Nyali’s home-based golfer Kailesh Chauhan was named the overall winner of the eighth leg of the Safaricom Golf Tour held at the same facility after returning 44 points in a field of 246 golfers.
The Safaricom golf tour continues to travel across the country with six legs remaining before it comes to a climax in a grand finale at Vipingo Ridge in August. The tour has outlined 4500 golfers who have taken part in the tournaments, junior clinics and outreach programs.
As part of growing Golf among the juniors in the country, Safaricom has partnered with Junior Golf Foundation to tap and nurture young talent in the golf sport. The juniors can register with Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) for KSh 1,000 and have access to any golf club in the country to play Golf.
After Nyali, the tournament heads to South Rift’s Kericho Golf Club on June 4.
